The Cabinet Mountains Wilderness

The Cabinet Mountains Wilderness was first set aside as a Primitive Area in 1935 and became one of the original units of the National Wilderness Preservation System with the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. That continuous protection makes it one of the longest-guarded wild landscapes in the country, a recognition of its outstanding natural, scenic, and primitive values. The Wilderness protects 94,272 acres within the Kootenai National Forest, spanning a narrow, 35-mile range of glaciated peaks and deep valleys roughly 15 miles southwest of Libby, Montana.

Cabinet Mountains recreational opportunities

The Cabinet Mountains Wilderness and its surrounding forests offer a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, climbing, backcountry camping, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The range is known for its rugged scenic beauty, more than 80 alpine lakes, and abundant wildlife, including grizzly bears, mountain goats, and elk. Rising above them all is Snowshoe Peak, at 8,738 feet the highest summit in the range and home to the Blackwell Glacier, the last named glacier remaining in the Cabinets.

Surrounding areas

Surrounding recreation areas include Kootenai Falls, the ancient groves of the Ross Creek Cedars Scenic Area, the Bull River valley, and Lake Koocanusa, a reservoir on the Kootenai River that stretches north toward the Canadian border.
